Nollie Woods: for eco-minded travellers, skaters, and those seeking a peaceful, escape in nature.
Exploring the Rye Area
Staying at NollieWoods puts you in the heart of one of the most characterful corners of the South East — where coast, countryside, and creativity come together. Within 25 miles of the cabin, there’s a wide range of places to explore, whether you’re here to skate, slow down, or soak up the local culture.
Just 15 minutes away, the medieval town of Rye is a must-visit — all cobbled streets, independent shops, and crooked timber-framed houses. Stop for coffee at one of the town’s many small cafes, browse the many antique and quirky shops, or climb the church tower for sea views stretching to Dungeness.
For skaters, The Source Park in Hastings — the world’s largest underground skate park — is under 40 minutes away and worth the trip. There are also several outdoor parks in the area for a more low-key session.
If it’s fresh air and open space you’re after, Camber Sands is your go-to — vast dunes, wild wind, and space to roam. Nature reserves, ancient woodlands, and walking trails that criss-cross the High Weald AONB give you a chance to explore on foot the beauty of Sussex. Great Dixter House and Gardens, just down the road, is perfect for anyone with an eye for design or a love of plants, and the amazing Bodiam Castle will give you some splendid views if you dare to climb the spiral staircases!
This part of East Sussex and Kent is quietly full of surprises — from tucked-away pubs and farm shops to independent galleries, microbreweries, and offbeat coastal spots. However you spend your time here, we are certain you will enjoy your time with us!
Rye is our nearest, and dearest, town. It is a medieval Cinque Port with cobbled streets and beautifully preserved ancient half-timbered buildings. Mermaid Street is one of the most photographed streets in the UK, it will not disappoint if you decide to take a wander. Once a haunt for the smuggling gangs, The Mermaid Inn and the surrounding streets are renowned for their ghost sightings and tales! If you like a spooky story perhaps tag along for the Rye Ghost Walk led by Rye’s very own town crier.
Rye Castle Museum & Ypres Tower are well worth a visit for a little insight into the history of the town. The tower formed part of Ryes fortification and was later a prison. The smaller Women’s Tower in the garden was the first women’s prison in the country.
Rye is full of the quaint and quirky! There are plenty of independent shops and galleries, see if you can find the little shops hiding in Needles Passage!
The food scene is Rye vibrant and diverse, there truly is something for all!
Take a look A Rye Good Time for all the places to see, things to do, and delicious food to eat!
Just a short drive from Nollie Woods, Great Dixter is one of East Sussex’s most remarkable historic homes and gardens. This 15th-century manor, restored and extended by Edwin Lutyens, offers a rich blend of medieval charm and Arts and Crafts design. The surrounding gardens, once shaped by renowned plantsman Christopher Lloyd, are a must-see for anyone with an interest in planting, colour, or thoughtful design. With seasonal displays, winding paths, and a sense of living history, Great Dixter makes for a rewarding and inspiring day out during your stay.
More rugged than Camber and Rye this beach is also shigle but has a mix of mud flats and sand at low tide. Some care must be taken when navigating the foreshore. However it is always more tranquil and if you head down to Ciff End at Pett Level you will see the pertrified forest lurking below the sand at low tide. The cliffs are also home to fossils…..and cliff falls! This is a great spot for rock pooling….again we have spent many hours here looking at the sea anenomes and trying to catch the shrimp!
This is one of our favourites! You will find a long ‘road’ taking you to the beach. Perfect for longboards, bikes and scooters. Nature reserve on one side and estuary on the other all packed with birds and wildlife. The Discovery Centre offers educational resources, refreshments and is dog friendly, of course! The beach is shingle until the tide recedes, you are then greeted with an expanse of sand. Always much quieter than the infamous Camber Sands on a sunny day.
Camber Sands beach stretches for almost five miles of unspoiled sand, backed by dunes and with stunning views out to sea. Camber Sands is known for being one of the only sandy beaches in East Sussex.
Camber Sands is also home to the only sand dune system in East Sussex. They’re beautifully unspoilt and provide a natural habitat for wildlife and plants with over 250 diferent species of plants and animals found on the dunes. Camber is home to The Kitesurf centre if you’re after some action. We prefer to watch the kitesurfers but you may wish to have a go!
